Important info!

It’s not only the LARGE space that you need if you are thinking of getting a Barn Owl or a Bird of prey, there are so many important things you need and that you to get.
I am making a list that is going to keep on getting updated in time.
The reason for this page is to make sure that people understand that it takes quite a bit of money and dedication and most of all time to have a Barn owl!

What I recommend is that you get in contact with a specialist within Bird of preys so you make sure that you have all the right papares that is needed. If the bird does not have a ankle ring you HAVE to report this to the police! This is an illegal captured owl! If you do get one anyway you will put through to trial, YOU WILL be held responsible for that the bird is captured!

When you search for Bird of Prey especially Barn Owls there are so many different opinions about what is right and wrong. Me personally would love to be able to train my little girl so she one day can be free completely. Both me and my partner wants what is best for her but due to the country that we live in, she wouldn’t be able to survive more then 24h, due to so much illegal hunting on Bird of Prey. She has no experience living outdoors and is very uncomfortable outside.
Barn Owls need their own parents from birth to teach them how to do it, or if they haven’t been in contact with any humans what so ever. So one day we hope we can join in a breeding program so we can help with the population of wild barn owls!

You can not only just “have” an owl, unless you have a MASSIVE big cage where the bird just “is”, there will still be expenses, money and dedication. They need to be fed twice a day and daily maintenance of fresh water just to name a few.
If you are still interested in having a large bird I recommend parrots! Any bird of Prey IS NOT SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN!!! If I could decide an age limit, you would have to be at least 20 years old to have one. You need to be able to see the small signs of sickness and provide attention and have the money to look after it. Even some people with long time experience within this area have lost their eyes from attacks. So you need to know what you are getting yourself into. :)
I recommending a long time of consideration of how your life is, where it’s going, do you have to move in the the future? Barn owls are very sensitive to new environments and can get very attached to its “spot”. If you move it can put them into depression. Will you be able to get the right specialized diet for your bird from where you live? and most of all the time and attention!
Many sites say that Barn Owls do not care for cuddles and being pet. Me personally have to say that i can not really agree with them. When we first rescued our little girl she did not trust humans, they had been grabbing her with towels so people could have a “look” up close. Still to this day we do not use any towels with her, but she is much more relaxed with them around her. We are still to this day rehabilitating her back to being relaxed around them.
Another important information is that they are very mentally sensitive, once you’ve broken the trust it is gone forever. So if you have children and they want to be involved a parrot is SO much more fun  for them.

Having a Barn Owl indoors like we have at the moment needs cleaning every second day and fresh water every day. They usually have one bath a day and always cleans their beak after eating. They need fresh water to keep the bacterias away!
Another thing to think about is that they do smell and you WILL notice as soon you haven’t cleaned.
After building up the trust with Aria we are comfortable having her loose in the house nowadays. We have come so far that we trust her to be loose on her own some whole nights. Her “spot”
is pretty  much only used during the days when she is asleep and when we are not at home. I can tell that she already gotten used to the free evenings of flying around finding new places to land. YES! trust me! THEY WILL land on exactly EVERYTHING! Think about that really nice painting you have on you wall that you love, Yes they will try to land on it and will probably knock it down! :D

As many people say they are very majestic creature! you never get tired of looking at them, they entertain you with all the little things they do, my favorite is when Aria is getting into the bath! looks a bit like Bambi on ice! They way she takes a bath is like watching her “slip” over and over again :P . The first time I actually thought that she was slipping but what’s just how they do it I guess, cause she has a none slippery bowl! :)

If they have been hand fed since birth they can be quite noisy! Always ask the breeder if they have been. Our one hardly makes any noise at all (due to her previous life experience) so they can be very different. Barn owls have very strong personalities!

I have made a list in the next to folder of what is needed to have a Barn owl. Read it through and think about it. :)
